medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (21. February) is the feast day of:

Severian of Scythopolis (d. c. 452) Bishop of Scythopolis (now Bet Shean,
Israel), Severian attended the council of Chalcedon in 451 and vigorously
supported the decrees passed there against monophysitism. On his return
home he was murdered by followers of the monophysite bishop of Jerusalem.

Paterius (d. 606) Paterius was a Roman monk, a follower and friend of
Gregory the Great. He served as notary of the Roman church, then became
bishop of Brescia. He was a voluminous biblical commentator.

Pepin of Landen (d. c. 646) The Carolingian Pepin was mayor of the palace
for three Merovingian kings. He was part of a very saintly family---his
wife was St. Ida of Nivelles, and his daughters were SS Begga and Gertrude
of Nivelles. Pepin was a peace-lover, and known for his justice. His cult
(surprise, surprise) was popular at Nivelles.

Germanus and Randoald (d. c. 677) Germanus was from Trier; he became a
monk and in time abbot of Grandval (Switzerland), with Randoald as his
prior. The two tried to defend the peasants of the area, who were being
oppressed by their lord---the lord was annoyed and killed G. and R.

George of Amastris (d. c. 825) George was from Kromna (near Amastris on
the Black Sea coast). He became a hermit on Mt. Sirik, then a monk, and
finally bishop of Amastris. He successfully defended his city when it was
attacked by Muslims.

Peter Damian (d. 1072) Peter Damian of Ravenna was well-educated, taught
at Ravenna, but then became a monk at Fonte Avellana in 1035. He was one
of the great monastic reformers of the eleventh century, but in 1057 was
forced to become cardinal bishop of Ostia (his letters begging to be
relieved of the office are very sad). PD thus became extremely active in
the broader reform of the western church producing a large number of
treatises and letters (four large volumes in the modern MGH edition, not
including sermons). He was declared a doctor of the church in 1828.
