medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (16. February) is the feast day of: Onesimus (d. c. 90) The runaway slave Onesimus was the reason behind Paul's letter to Philemon. The old Roman Martyrology reports that O. was St. Timothy's successor as bishop of Ephesus, and was martyred. Honestus (d. 270) Honestus was from Nimes. Saturninus of Toulouse converted, ordained, and sent him as a missionary to Spain. H. seems to have been martyred at Pamplona, but Toulouse and Amiens have also claimed the honor. Elias, Jeremias, Isaias, Samuel, and Daniel (d. 309) This is a group of five Egyptians. They went to visit some fellow Christians who had been condemned to the Cilician mines. On their way back to Egypt, they were seized and beheaded at Caesarea in Palestine. Eusebius was a witness and wrote a full account. Bernard Scammacca (blessed) (d. 1486) Bernard was from Catania, the scion of a wealthy family. He lived a thoroughly dissolute life until he was badly wounded in a duel, after which he repented, became a Dominican, and spent the rest of his life in rigorous penance. His cult was approved in 1825. Eustochium Calafato (d. 1468) Eustochium was a noblewoman of Messina. She became a Poor Clare as a child in 1446. In 1457 she received permission to found a Franciscan Observant nunnery at Montevergine. She was canonized in 1988. Dr. Phyllis G.
