Dear Allen,
Not a big difference between HP-120 and HP-140. It supports external
microphone. Actually, in my interviews I placed an external microphone
at the other end and the machine next to me. It recorded from both
microphones with a very good quality. I tested different microphones. An
AIWA mic for digital recording has been the best one for my purpose. It
costs 900 Swedish Krowns (100 USD).

Subject: Re: New Sony 1GB Minidisc Format

Resa,

I think Sony's biggest problem is that ignored user requests for too
long.
There are lots of other options out there now.

I was using MD but gave up on it back in July and bought the Marantz
PMD-
670 solid state recorder. It's designed for interview recording and it
works extremely well. It costs 2x to 3x more than current minidisc
models
but it was worth it. Aside from rapid digital upload to PC, the audio
quality is better (not that MD is bad), the recorder is much easier to
use
and more reliable.

I've seen a few people mention the iRiver machines. There is a new model
out, iHP-140 (see http://www.irivernordic.com/products.php?pid=24). Does
the iHP-120 have mic-in? The blurb on the iHP-140 states: "Another new
feature on iHP-140 is the ability to plug-in an external mic, using the
players mic-in." In the past that has been a key recording feature that
has
been missing on a lot of recorders based on harddisks.

Where the new minidisc will win is at the low end of the market. The
cheapest Hi-MD recorders are supposed to cost around $250. The
price/quality ratio will be hard to beat.

Alan.
