BOYS AND READING: MEETING THE CHALLENGE
 4 FEBRUARY 2004, LONDON

'I find reading boring and I don't have the time. Most stories are on the TV so I don't really bother now. I would sooner play on my computer.'

This twelve year-old boy confirms many people's worst fears about boys' reading. The last few years have seen unprecedented concern about this subject. Influential reports have been published highlighting the gap between boys' reading and girls', and changes have been made to the curriculum. Yet this same period has also seen boys devouring Harry Potter in their hundreds of thousands, and the appeal of non-fiction for boys has long been known.

Such contradictory messages can make it hard to separate fact from assumption. What are the challenges and how should library staff respond to them? How can they promote reading to boys effectively?

This workshop provides an opportunity to explore the facts about boys' reading and to identify strategies for supporting and encouraging boys' reading in school and public libraries. The focus will be on boys from eight to fourteen.

BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
* explored the issues surrounding boys and reading
* practical methods for raising the profile and appeal of reading
* extra strategies for exploiting books and other resources
* more confidence in helping boys, their parents, carers and teachers

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Children's librarians and other public library staff, school librarians and other school staff, school library service staff.

WORKSHOP LEADER: Anne Harding
Anne is an independent trainer and lecturer. She specialises in children's and young people's reading and children's and school libraries.
