Apologies to those who are not in London (UK) or the vicinity, but this will be an excellent meeting exposing the conditions faced by workers in the international cut-flower industry. Flyer attached. All are welcome. ************************************************ *Workers and Roses* *Organising in Support of Women Workers on Flower Farms in Zambia* Flowers produced on farms in Zambia, one of the poorest countries in the world, are destined for shops here in Europe. Recently trade unions and NGOs in Zambia have revealed widespread abuse of workers rights on these farms. Common issues include chemical poisoning from pesticides, forced overtime, overcrowded living conditions, very low wages and sexual harassment. Cleave Silavwe, Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Plantation and Agricultural Workers of Zambia, will be talking in London at the invitation of Women Working Worldwide & IIFWEA prior to participating in a TGWU education course on globalisation in food and agriculture. She will explain the abuses that women on the flower farms face and how the trade union is working to combat these. As Valentine's Day approaches come and find out what we can do to support these workers in their struggle to improve conditions on the farms. 3-5 pm Friday 13th February 2004 Congress Suite 4, TUC , Congress House Great Russell St London WC 1B For more information please contact Women Working Worldwide at [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> or telephone 0161 247 1760 -
