Dear colleagues,
Working through the drafts I have written a few years
ago and re-interpreting some data I found some from a
small sample from the roman amphitheater of Ulpia
Traiana Sarmisegetusa (in Roman Dacia/Romania).
The canid bones are very few, but from the 3 complete
bones (the other 2 with very "normal" data), there is
a humerus with some "odd" characteristics. The GL is
210 mm, Bprox-51, no valid B dist and the
diaphisis-24 mm. The WRH (height)estimated based on
Koudelka and Harcourt is 70 or 69 cm. The shaft index
(11.4) is characteristic for a very robust individual.
My question is if this may be attributed to the wild
form (wolf)(I have no other morphological or metrical
comparative data and no reference for such a dog in
roman time here) or could it be an unusual high and
robust domestic dog?
Thanks for your help!
Best wishes for 2005!
Alex
