LTSN PHYSICAL SCIENCES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

'Supporting Students with Disabilities in the Physical Sciences'

Date: Wednesday 9th June 2004
Time: 10.30am - 4pm
Venue: The Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham

In 2001 the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA)
came into force. This legislation constitutes part 4 of the Disability
Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 and was implemented in September
2002. The SENDA Act covers disability discrimination in all further and
higher education organisations. It is therefore now illegal to
discriminate against students or potential students on the grounds of
disability.

Whilst this legislation may appear to be a common sense and fair
approach to supporting students there are a number of issues which
have particular implications for physical sciences departments, such as
the provision of teaching resources or modifying laboratory equipment.
However not all disabilities are visible, such as dyslexia, or mental
health problems yet 'reasonable adjustments' must be made to support
all disabled students.

This workshop will review the implications of SENDA for physical
sciences departments and what constitutes 'reasonable adjustments'
that departments need to make to support both current and potential
students. There will also be opportunity to discuss approaches to
supporting disabled students, including laboratory work and using
technology.

Further information and the programme can be found on our website under
the events section

There is NO registration fee for this workshop for those working in UK
