PRIVATISATION: POLICIES AND STATISTICS
Privatisation is changing not only the face of publicly funded
services, but also their infrastructure and the way statistics can be
compiled. To monitor the impact of these changes on service providers and
users, reliable statistics are needed, but these are not readily available.
Changes in the way statistics are compiled makes it difficult to compare the
situation before and after changes. Added to this, information which used to
be in the public domain is disappearing from view as it becomes 'commercial
in confidence'. This year's Radical Statistics conference explores these
problems, with examples taken from a range of services and areas of our
national life.
Our keynote speaker, Professor Allyson Pollock, is Chair of Health
Policy & Health Services Research, UCL and Dir. of Research & Development at
UCL Hospitals NHS Trust. Prof. Pollock's work on the private finance
initiative has been of high profile. She has given evidence to the Health,
Transport, and Treasury Select Committees of the House of Commons, and to
the Finance Committee of the Scottish Parliament. She has also co-written
articles on the impact of the WTO and GATS on health and other public
services.

Friends House is at 173 Euston Road, directly opposite Euston station
and is easily accessible by most forms of transport. (www.quaker.org.uk)
By tube
The nearest tube stations are Euston and Euston Square, which are on
the Northern, Victoria, Metropolitan, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines.
By bus
Buses 10, 18, 30, 73 and 205 pass the door whilst 59, 68, 91, 168, and
253 stop nearby.
By car
Note that the south side of Euston Road, the side of Friends House, is
INSIDE THE CONGESTION CHARGE ZONE. Go to www.cclondon.com for details of
how to pay. However it is possible to drive along Euston road without
paying. Also, friends House is within a meter parking zone. Charges must be
paid Monday to Friday 08.30 - 18.30, Saturday 09.00 - 16.30. There are
alternative, longer-term parking facilities under Euston Station.
