Society launches Mathematics Promotion Unit

The London Mathematical Society launches its Mathematics Promotion Unit by welcoming Jennifer Pollard to its new role of Mathematics Promotion & Policy Assistant.

The Unit has been established in response to concerns about how mathematics is perceived by the public and policy makers, and the decline in uptake of mathematics post-16 into further and higher education.  It forms a new resource for the media to gain information about mathematics and to offer access to the mathematical community.

Jennifer will be working with the media to promote mathematics education and research to the public and policy makers.  She intends to provide a strong base for journalists and broadcasters to obtain comprehensive data on mathematics education and research and to make contact with mathematicians.  She also plans to publicize events and developments within the mathematical community and to coordinate responses to inquiries and reports into mathematics.

The Unit will work under the Society's Executive Secretary, Peter Cooper, in close contact with the Society's work in education.  It will also work with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), the Society's partners within the Council for the Mathematical Sciences (CMS).

Jennifer graduated from the University of Manchester in 2003 with a BSc in Chemistry and MSc in History of Science.  She is currently studying for an MSc in Science Communication at Imperial College, London.  The Unit is based at the Society's London Offices in De Morgan House on Russell Square.  Jennifer took up her post on Tuesday 4th May and will be based there part-time.
