Equality? It would be interesting to learn what exception in the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 this company is relying on in order to restrict recruitment to females. To use the Act's own terms, in what way could they argue that being female is a 'genuine occupational qualification' for the job of presenting a TV programme? Surely 'the essential nature' of the job of TV science-programme presenter, even where the audience is young, does not call exclusively for a female 'for reasons of authenticity, so that the essential nature of the job would be materially different if carried out by a [man]'. I wonder if X-Perimental were advertising for a 'boy' of the same age, he would be expected to be an intelligent 'hunk' ??? How will applicants go about proving their 'sassiness' at interview stage?? They will certainly need that sense of humour! Sarah Blackford ********************************************************************** 1.
