This latest issue has just been posted. Its theme is ‘Design’s Other’ and
it features five papers ranging from the scholarly to personal accounts on
the issue of western culture’s dominance of design. The papers consider
whether this is necessarily ‘a bad thing’, what kind of cultural exchanges
are appropriate to current circumstances, problems of cross-cultural
translation and what there might be to learn from non-western modes
of ‘design’. Authors of the papers are Stanislaus Fung, Samer Akkach, Tony
Fry, Kati Reijonen and Francois-Xavier Nzi iyo Nsenga.

As well, a debate is initiated by Victor Margolin on the politics of
design, with Abby Mellick Lopes and Tony Fry weighing in. And Cameron
Tonkinwise reviews Vilem Flusser’s ‘The Shape of Things’.

All the best in your research for 2004.
