dear Rosan, five italian intellectuals - Andrea Branzi, Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari, Alessandro Mendini and Ettore Sottsass - met lately to talk about design. here's a part of their discussion: "Alessandro Mendini: [...] Ettore, your Memphis was also a place of knowledge. Ettore Sottsass: Our Memphis. We were always drunk... we had the problem of breaking the cultural knot of the middle class. Memphis started off after ten years of talking about the social utility of our profession. Memphis and counter-design were shouts invoking change." (i don't know what Sottsass refered to exactly by saying "We were always drunk...", but the 'state of being drunk' was constructive in this case...) Reference: Sottsass, E., et al, 2004. If you confuse drinking beer with the process that leads to research, you will find yourself among the millions of unemployed beer drinkers rather than the far smaller group of employed design research specialists or the small but growing group of working designers with research skills.
