JOB: Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

(Salary grade and range:  RA1A:  £19,659 - £29,546 pa)

Developing Probabilistic Graphical Models to Value Weather and Environmental Information
Relating to Military Decision-Making

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research fellow to work on the above project for a period of two years.
The work will involve the development of probabilistic graphical models, such as Bayesian networks and influence
diagrams, and will also involve the elicitation of probabilities and utilities from domain experts. The goal is to
develop a methodology to help assess the value of weather and environmental information in the context of
military decision-making, initially concentrating on a small number of specific scenarios. Domain experts from
the Ministry of Defence and the Meteorological Office have been identified and the post-holder will be expected to
liaise with these on a regular basis.

Ideally, the candidate will have completed, or be about to complete, a PhD in computer science, statistics or

operational research / decision sciences, involving probabilistic graphical models and/or decision analysis. They

must be a national of a European Economic Area country (i.e. all countries in the European Union plus Norway,

Iceland and Liechtenstein), or of a Commonwealth country. The post will be funded by the Research Acquisition

Organisation of the UK Ministry of Defence. The start date is negotiable.

The successful candidate will join the Applied Mathematics & Operational Research Group, within the Engineering

Systems Department of Cranfield University at the Royal Military College of Science in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire,

UK.
