PhD in Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases

Applications are invited for a joint Health Protection Agency (HPA) and
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) PhD Scholarship in
Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases. The scholarship will cover
three-years full time fees (for EU students) and a maintenance grant of
£12,500 per annum.

Candidates should possess a bachelors (2i or above) and a masters degree in
mathematics, science or other discipline relevant to mathematical modelling
of infectious diseases. Applications are encouraged from citizens of any
country, though students from outside the EU will be expected to find
adequate funds to cover the full fees for foreign students.

The successful candidate will join an established and dynamic modelling
group at the HPA Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC) in North
London. They will help develop state-of-the-art modelling and statistical
techniques and apply these to detailed data sets to help address real-world
epidemiological problems. Possible topics include: modelling the emergence
of antibiotic resistant gonorrhoea in the UK; modelling the transmission and
molecular evolution of influenza viruses; and modelling outbreaks of viral
haemorrhagic fevers, such as Ebola, in collaboration with the World Health
Organisation. The student will be registered for a research degree at LSHTM,
and will have access to relevant post-graduate courses. Supervisors from
CDSC and LSHTM will be identified with expertise appropriate to the chosen
topic.

Further details on the possible projects are available from Katy Turner
([log in to unmask]).

Applicants should send in a covering letter detailing their background and
research interests, together with a full CV, listing the contact details of
2 referees to the following address by 30th September 2004:
