Confidentiality

The safeguarding of medical confidentiality is of great importance. Clients of the Occupational Health Service provide us with information on their health and aspects of their personal life which must be kept strictly private and not passed on to anyone else without their consent.  Records may also include highly sensitive information about work activities which has to be kept secure.

Failure to observe rules of confidentiality can be embarrassing or damaging to a client’s interests. Clients have to be confident that information provided to the OH Service is treated with respect and is held securely, and that all members of the Service observe the rules of confidentiality for the service to function effectively.

Rules

  1. You must not reveal any information about clients, including information on their work activities, to anyone outside of the OH Service, except where this is allowed under working procedures & protocols.

  1. Sensitive personal information provided by a client of which you become aware of in the course of your work should not be discussed or disclosed to other members of the OH Service unless disclosure is necessary for the proper provision of services.

  1. Discussion with colleagues of confidential information about a client should not take place where it may be overheard by others.

  1. Occupational health records & health surveillance information must be kept securely and not left unattended.

  1. Computers with access to the OH Database or holding confidential information on clients must not be left switched on overnight, or left without password protection during the day.

Failure to adhere to these rules could result in disciplinary action.

Confidentiality Administrator

I am about to commence a new post and have been allocated an administrator.
Has anyone put together a statement for an admin. to sign in respect of their role and confidentiality?  I would be most grateful for a steer on this.
