Hi Glenn

Being controversial and also cynical I agree with what you are saying. Like yourselves our employees receive six months full pay but can have sickness upto 52wks (full pay made up from the Gov) Many of them have anxiety, stress or depression on their sick certs but when speaking to them wouldn't know the symptoms if it hit them in their face - uncaring I know - but this then puts a mockery on those who really are suffering and genuingly need our help and support. Also many of these employees are not on medication (not always the answer I know) or have been referred for counselling. Lets face it we could all go to our GP tomorrow and come out with the sick cert stating 'stress'. Like you I'm not a counsellor but when we refer such employees to the CPN,  who runs a clinic on site, he is usually in agreement that perhaps the individual perceives stress slightly differently to ourselves.

This debate will probably run for some time to come yet I'm sure!

Do you think that stress can be classed as a mental state, as a opposed to a physical one, or do you think doing so is incorrect
being really controversial, i feel it is a mental state, but is aided by the fact that my organisation pays full pay for six months. It's amazing how many individuals who have had mental issues, and "work related stress" suddenly get better and come back to work at the six month period.

Now call me a cynic, but do people really have more stress these days compared to previous years? Look back at the early seventies, when people were on 3-day weeks, and power-cuts ruled. Were people off sick then with stress?

Like MSD it seems all too easy these days to suffer from stress, it's hard to prove, harder to treat and getting paid full pay is a boon.

I'm not a counsellor (obviously) but i'd be keen to see what others have to say on this.

regards

Glenn
