Certainly an interesting point. I do feel that there is a conflict of interest if a GP is managing a colleague, indeed I was surprised when I was a practice nurse (some time ago) that so many of the practice employees were registered as patients at the practice that they worked for. However a new GP came to work at the practice and refused the kind offer of a Pre-employment medical from a colleague in the surgery, who was then quite put out. He went to a neighbouring practice for the medical!
I think that the opinion was that as a GP they know their staff and the medical conditions well enough to be able to manage the condition in the workplace, without specialist intervention.

Interesting,. Were you not able to persuade the GP friend that OH is a speciality in medicine and nursing, and therefore they might benefit from specialist expertise. I wonder if they take "care of their own needs by mutual support" for plastic surgery, oncology and other specialist interventions..., (unless of course they have OH qualifications themselves)
Best wishes,
Diane

They were aware of the NHS initiative for OH to GP surgeries but were of the opinion that it was something that there was no need for, as the practice tended to take care of its own needs by mutual support etc. Perhaps this was the reason that the PCT OH service never got off the ground in my local area, but it interesting to see what advice is available and what other areas do.

Perhaps I am missing the point but GP's are independent contractors and not employee of the NHS; they contract to provide GMS or PMS services to the PCT;they can decide where to source their OH requirements - they are not obliged to use NHS OH services. It is interesting to talk about DSE in general practice, many of which are very modern and up-to-date but my own experience in hospitals with fully fledged OH department is that the DSE for doctors in OPD, nurses on the ward, medical secretaries and clerks etc, if they are done at all, is non existent and workstations are appalling. As for medical fitness to practice for GPs, it may be difficult to implement for independent contractors as opposed to NHS employees but I am open to suggestions; I am aware of GMC good practice guidelines, reappraisals and revalidation requirements. As for vaccination of medical & nursing staff in GP it is usually done inhouse and records kept.
