The IRS NHS OH conference in October is covering these topics and points - so if you need an expert speaker you could ask one of those. Contact me direct and I will give you their details or go to the website www.conferncesandtraining.com/nhs for more information of what they are covering.

David,

Hope you are well and Christine is settling in o.k. Can I ask what you are doing down there with regards to MMR vaccine and dip/tet? We have stopped giving rubella since only MMR has become available and same with tet since dip/tet (though didn’t use much of this – usually referred to G.P.). Am trying to organise for an expert speaker to come and talk to us about it, so can decide on a plan for future. Would be very interested to know what others are doing, particularly those in NHS settings.

Thanks

Naz

Dear All,

THE NHS is a great place to work!

I returned to the NHS in sunny Devon last year having worked in a senior position with an independant OH provider for three years previously and prior to that in heavy industry (Shipyard).

Certainly over the last few years our trust has finally recognised that you have to support employees to keep them in work and OH is a key part of that, driven by DOH standards and guidance which has placed far more responsibility on us. I took a small salary drop to do that but the pension is worth a lot more than the salary difference (I must be getting old!) and we are able to offer salaries at the top of the grading structure which compare well with private industry. Part of the fun in the NHS is working and being supported as part of a team, I now have eight nurses!

I have recently recruited a G grade (OH Dip) from the private sector (salary increase for her) and two E grade training posts who actually were already employed in the trust at G but were prepared to accept a salary drop just to get into OH.

In support of them and other departments in the South West  a group of Nurses within SWANHOPS (South West Association of NHS OH Physicians) met and working in partnership with Plymouth University are developing a course titled "Introduction to Occupational Health Practice" principally based around the old ENB N61 OH practice, the course is structured to meet NHS Needs and provides basic training for nurses new to OH, or nurses who are not prepared for whatever reason to undergo degree training just to obtain a specialist practice qualification.

This course is to be run as a partnership with the University in the same way that currently the trust runs cardiac or intensive care nursing courses and as such will be recognised within the NHS as a measure of competency under agenda for change, If there are any other NHS managers out there who are interested in securing places please let me know.

Incidentally for those wanting specialist practitioner status, from 2005 Plymouth University are aiming to run  a BSC course in Public Health Nursing (Occupational Health)  probably part time over 2/3 years, again let me know if you want to be kept informed

regards

David
