Yes - the work was done by PS Burge in the late-70s and early 80s. If
you do a Medline search with his name and peak flow or similar, you will
find a number of useful papers - Kate

Does the recommendation for serial peak flow apply to all respiratory
sensitisers? If so, where does this come from?

Margaret

Hi Sue,

If you apply the general principles of Coshh to the information in HSE
publication AS5 then it would indicate a requirement for surveillance
at
some level.

Pidgeon fanciers lung used to be very common and related to the
allergic
reaction to dust in poultry feathers, however latest thinking is that
the
questionnaire into signs and symptoms followed up by serial peak flow,
is
more effective than routine spirometry on an annual basis.

there is also a risk of the employee picking up psittacosis from
infected
birds

hope this helps

Hi All

One of my H&S colleagues recommended lung function testing to a
poultry
producing client and was told that no-one they know of in the industry
actually has this surveillance for their employees- I beg to differ but
need
some concrete information i.e. company names if possible to back up
our
response.

Regards
Sue
