Since when have the terms 'new media' and 'avant-garde' been transposable?

One of the key uses, if not _the_ key use of taxonomical location is
control/power.

I also believe in part is that once taxonomies begin to settle in, the
truly avant-garde begin to move on. And yes, I do believe that the
avant-garde still exists, and has not really waned much since its rise
at the fin de siecle. Its modality has merely changed.

Classification is always a form of power!

Let's think about this instead.

It seems astonishing that this isn't being addressed in the many
attemtps to capture the media(um)/genre/ism.

Does it benefit the people on this list to fix its taxonomical
character?

I would venture that it does.
