According to my well thumbed 1967 USBM A dictionary of mining. mineral and
related terms: -

"Nottingham system, Barry Mining - A longwall method of working coal seams in
which the trams run on a rail track along the face and handloaded at the sides.
It follows that the system can only be adopted in relatively thick seams where
the trams can travel along the face without any roof ripping. The method is now
largely replaced by face conveyors."
