The MMSD study, precursor to the Eden Project, attempted to identify the challenges facing the minerals industry. I attended one of the MMSD workshops and of the 45 or so participants, none represented the history community. The growth of the concept of "sustainable development" has resulted in the creation of a niche of its own within the minerals industry. It is relatively new and therefore offers new areas of opportunity. Persons evolved in the study of mining history might have success in influencing on-going MMSD developments such as the Eden Project. Peter Maciulaitis
