THE SACKLER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN THE HISTORY OF ASTRONOMY AND NAVIGATIONAL SCIENCES

The Royal Observatory, Greenwich houses one of the finest collections of scientific

instruments in the world. These holdings are divided into four main disciplines: Astronomy,

Horology, Hydrography and Navigational Instruments.

 

The Sackler Research Fellowship in the History of Astronomy and Navigational Sciences

has been established to promote advanced research in the history of science and scientific

instruments, specifically related to the strengths of the Royal Observatory’s collections. The

aim of the fellowship is to provide a series of publications that will serve as a reliable

academic touchstone for scholars, as well as providing a convincing model for future

research. The National Maritime Museum invites applicants of any nationality who have

completed advanced research:

 

1. In one or more types of instruments represented by the collection.

2. Into the work of a particular individual or group of instrument makers related to the

collection.

3. Into some aspect of the history of the Navigational Sciences or the Royal Observatory,

Greenwich.

 

The Sackler Fellowship is intended for younger postgraduate or postdoctoral scholars, but

applications from individuals who have demonstrated equivalent commitment to advanced

research in the field may be considered. The conditions for a fellowship are:

 

* The Fellowship is for two years, commencing in the October following appointment, with

a grant of £15,000 p.a.

* Tenure of the Fellowship will receive printed acknowledgement in any and all

publications resulting from work undertaken as part of it.

* A Fellow may be requested to attend conferences or symposia on behalf of the Museum, to

participate in informal seminars with staff and to provide a quarterly report on progress.

 

A formal progress report must be submitted to the Sackler Committee at the end of each year.

The renewal and extension of the fellowship will be contingent on the outcome of this review.

 

The Sackler Fellowship will be tenable from October 2005.

Completed forms must be received by 15 November 2004 and short-listed candidates will be

interviewed in January/February 2005. Travel expenses for interview will be paid to full-time

NOTES FOR APPLICANTS

 

 

            The application form asks for brief personal details, the title of the proposed research project,

and the names and addresses of two referees. The application form should be accompanied by

the following information as appendices:

 

1.    a curriculum vitae, this should be kept short and include details of the applicant's education,

employment history, and publications or papers delivered, if any;

 

2.    an outline – not exceeding 3 sides – of the proposed research project, a timetable for its

completion, and proposals for making the results available. (The Museum does not undertake

to publish or assist with publication of the results of work accomplished during the tenure of

the fellowship).

 

Appendices must be typewritten or word-processed on A4 paper and suitable for photocopying.
