Senior Lecturer/Reader in Film Studies at the University of Sussex
in the new department in the School of Humanities of Media and Film

Salary: £36,464 - £41,333 pa.

We are seeking to make a senior appointment to make a key strategic 
contribution to our new collaborative expansion in Film Studies to support 
the new department of Media and Film within the School of Humanities, 
intended for Autumn 2004.

We offer a stimulating, research-focused environment with a strong 
commitment to delivering the highest standard of teaching and learning. 
Candidates must have PhD or equivalent, and be able to deliver an 
established research performance in academic publication at national and 
preferably international level. Experience of curriculum and programme 
design is desirable at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide academic leadership in 
the area of Film Studies within a Media and Cultural Studies disciplinary 
grouping, and to sustain research excellence at an international level. 
They will contribute to the strategic development of learning, teaching or 
quality assurance at a national or international level within the subject 
community, initiate and lead bids for external funding, develop links with 
professional, public and/or academic bodies. They will also contribute 
significantly to a sense of positive growth and collegiality within the 
Department in a period of significant change.

Selection Criteria
Essential
1. Significant individual research performance with a proven track record 
of publication at least at national level and preferably most at 
international level;
2. Solid experience of the disciplinary context of Media and Cultural 
Studies;
3. Deep intellectual understanding of, and commitment to, the key 
conceptual strengths of our research strategy in mediated cultures;
4. Experience of initiating and leading bids for external funding;
5. Ability to mentor, develop and supervise less experienced colleagues;
6. Experience in senior leadership within an academic context in order to 
facilitate a shared sense of intellectual purpose and direction with 
colleagues;
7. An active awareness and understanding of the current and planned policy 
changes in Higher Education, with a sense of their potential impact;
A demonstrable active commitment to teamwork and collective purpose.
