March 18th- 20th, 2005 Why now ? * At a time when the BBC's Charter is being reviewed by the government and when Ofcom is engaged in a major review of the future of public service television, it is timely to revisit and reassess the origins, nature and influence of the Peacock Report. The Peacock Committee was established in 1985 and reported in 1986. * The publication of the Peacock Report on the financing of the BBC was a major event in the history of broadcasting policy in the UK. Its influence on the development of policy such as the 2003 Communications Act, and the actions of the media regulator Ofcom, have been profound, even if the subject of ongoing debate.
