So says Developing Academic Library Staff for Future Success, a new book from Facet Publishing, the publishing arm of CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. "Academic libraries cannot hope to succeed in achieving their objectives and providing the highest possible quality service to their customers without a strategically managed approach to staff development and training," says Margaret Oldroyd, Staff and Quality Development Manager for De Montfort University's Department of Library Services and the book's editor. "I hope that the issues and recommendations set out in this book, which are equally relevant within and outwith the UK context, will serve to stimulate debate and action at all levels across the sector." She is Chair of the CILIP Chartership Board and is actively involved in the current review of the criteria for entry to Chartered membership and Fellowship. Margaret is a member of the SCONUL Advisory Committee on Staffing for which she has led a group that has produced a strategy for the development of senior library managers, especially in relation to management and leadership skills.
