UNIVERSITY LIBRARY STAFF MUST DEVELOP NEW SKILLS TO MEET HIGHER EDUCATION CHANGES

New book highlights changing roles in changing climate

In a climate of rapid change - growth in student numbers, new e-learning methods, the need to manage resources on a value-for-money basis, and the move towards the digital library - staff development is a key area of concern for university and college library managers. So says Developing Academic Library Staff for Future Success, a new book from Facet Publishing, the publishing arm of CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

"Academic libraries cannot hope to succeed in achieving their objectives and providing the highest possible quality service to their customers without a strategically managed approach to staff development and training," says Margaret Oldroyd, Staff and Quality Development Manager for De Montfort University's Department of Library Services and the book's editor. "I hope that the issues and recommendations set out in this book, which are equally relevant within and outwith the UK context, will serve to stimulate debate and action at all levels across the sector."

With contributions from practicing managers in education institutions throughout the country, the book looks at the place of staff development in the current and future strategic management of academic libraries. It highlights how roles are changing and evaluates the implications of this for skill needs and development routes. This book is essential reading for all current and future academic library managers as well as institutional managers and staff developers.
