I have not been a member of CILIP for very long and am curious. Does CILIP carry out an annual survey of its members ? For example subscribers perceptions of the organisation, whether subscribers feel they are getting value for money for their membership fees ? The cost is very high - my husband is in the Royal Society of Chemistry and pays £89 and the BNES (nuclear) charge £30, again for similar services. >>> [log in to unmask] 09/27/04 01:32pm >>> Or virtual events/courses like the Open University? How about a virtual CILIP and events held at different venues around the country? -----Original Message----- From: Alyson Hogarth [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: 27 September 2004 12:52 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Reform proposals mean lower subscriptions for CILIP members in 2005 Easy. CILIP lives in London where it has to pay huge building and wage overheads. Contrary to the beliefs of some, London isn't at the centre of the country, it's in the bottom right hand corner. Most members have to pay huge train fares (sometimes more than their membership fees!) to attend CILIP events. It's been suggested before, but moving to a more central and less expensive part of the country would help. Alyson Hogarth. (=89 euros), that includes a professional journal and membership of three special interest groups. The services offered here in the Netherlands are no different to those in the UK. I cannot understand how CILIP justifies a membership fee of sterling 150 (138 reduced!!). Could I just add to the discussion that the equivalent membership in a German library association costs roughly about 47 Pounds per year (70 Euros), with the maximum fee of 61 Pounds (90 Euros). And I can honestly say that the services provided in return don't differ enough to justify that amount of money.
