Good idea - move it. How about a virtual CILIP and events held at different
venues around the country?

Easy. CILIP lives in London where it has to pay huge building and wage
overheads. Contrary to the beliefs of some, London isn't at the centre of
the country, it's in the bottom right hand corner. Most members have to pay
huge train fares (sometimes more than their membership fees!) to attend
CILIP events. It's been suggested before, but moving to a more central and
less expensive part of the country would help. Alyson Hogarth.

Following on from Sonja's comment about the cost of being a member of the
German library association, as a member of the Dutch library association I
pay 60 pounds p.a. (=89 euros), that includes a professional journal and
membership of three special interest groups. The services offered here in
the Netherlands are no different to those in the UK. I cannot understand how
CILIP justifies a membership fee of sterling 150 (138 reduced!!).

No, I am sure many of us agree with you. Could I just add to the discussion
that the equivalent membership in a German library association costs roughly
about 47 Pounds per year (70 Euros), with the maximum fee of 61 Pounds (90
Euros). And I can honestly say that   the services provided in return don't
differ enough to justify that amount of money.
