Metadata now “essential” for library and information professionals, records managers and publishers

New book shows developments will have profound effect on cataloguing and indexing

Metadata is having a profound effect on library and information work, and a timely new book from Facet Publishing is set to provide a thought-provoking and useful introduction to the subject.  Published in the summer of 2004, Metadata for Information Management and Retrieval is written by David Haynes, Head of CILIP Consultancy Services and a leading advocate of the subject.

“The forthcoming new ISBN standard, the proposed introduction of Digital Object Identifiers, the increasing use of Radio Frequency ID tags in academic and public libraries, and the widespread adoption of the Government Category List on UK public sector websites are all aspects of metadata that are having an impact on library and information work,” comments Mr Haynes.  “Work on data modeling such as Fundamental Requirements for Bibliographic Records will affect the new Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules AACR3 standard (due out in 2007) and this in turn will have a profound effect on the work of cataloguers and indexers.”

Metadata for Information Management and Retrieval assesses the current theory and practice and examines key developments - including global initiatives - in terms of both policy and technology. It demonstrates ways in which metadata allows interoperation of information systems, improves retrieval performance and provides a way of managing information resources.

Destined to become essential reading for network-oriented librarians and information workers in all sectors and for students of librarianship, information science and records management, this book will also provide useful background reading for ICT professionals supporting content-based systems and information services.  “Publishers, policy makers and practitioners in other curatorial traditions such as museums and archives will also find much of relevance,” Mr Haynes adds.
