Public Library Service Standards Consultation

DCMS has issued the consultation papers to the English Library
Authorities and other stakeholders on proposed new Service Public
Library Standards. They have been worked up in conjunction with the
Advisory Council on Libraries. The proposed standards are essentially a
streamlined version of the existing set but with some modifications.

DCMS intend to supplement the proposed service standards with impact
measures designed to highlight the contribution that library authorities
make to the communities they serve and to wider corporate objectives.
These measures are in the process of development.

The consultation papers refer to a report by Martin Jennings of IPF
which can be found at the following website:

"Library charity Libri has renewed demands for an urgent overhaul of the
public library service ahead of a government summit on its future. The
seminar will hear calls from Libri's Tim Coates for work to begin in
five or six model councils to improve cost efficiency in areas including
staffing and stock processing."
