BACK TO SCHOOL - FOUR BRAND NEW WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOL LIBRARIANS

Linked, exclusive sessions build up into a comprehensive package

Autumn sees the launch of a series of new workshops designed to help school librarians, and teachers with school library responsibilities, get to grips with the challenges of providing effective services to support pupils and teachers.  Developed by CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, the four sessions cover: information and communications technology; support for teaching and learning; developing subject resources for teaching purposes; and making an impact in the school.

“If you want to be effective, you have to develop the services to meet the needs of your users, which means choosing priorities, setting targets and development planning,” says Sharon Markless, director of two of the four workshops and a former teacher herself. “We’ll be helping workshop participants explore the information skills needed by their pupils and develop ways of supporting their learning effectively.”

With strictly limited attendance numbers, to allow everyone the opportunity to participate fully, the workshops run from September 2004 to January 2005.  They can be taken individually, or there are special discounts for signing up for more than two - on top of the discount normally offered to CILIP members.

Finding the right resources is the focus of a further workshop in the series.  “Participants will gain practical experience of finding curriculum and subject resources on the Web, get guidance on the best support tools to use to develop their own role, and also become aware of the copyright implications of using these resources,” comments Caroline Moore, a freelance consultant and library practitioner and another of the workshop leaders.

To kick the series off, there’s a special session on applying Information and Communications Technology in the school library context. “Some ICT skills are often called ‘basic’ but they’re only basic once they have been explained and understood,” say Andy Ewers and Nick Lewis, who have been providing ICT and Internet seminars for CILIP and predecessor bodies since 1994. “We’ll make sure that the advanced skills are easy to understand, so you can start learning with confidence.”

Further details on all the workshops are available on CILIP’s web site, at www.cilip.org.uk/training_events/esls.html.
