In an ideal world, I would agree. However, in practice I know of no situation in any industry where substantial pay increases have been awarded without some opposition from employers and tough negotiation being involved. There is always, it seems, an argument for financial retrenchment irrespective of the economic climate. Mike's call for a more assertive role of advocate on the part of our professional association is a longstanding but, in my view, valid one.

I'm as morally weak as the next person, and only too willing to point out the salary gap between our profession and others. My point is that demonstrating how indispensable we are to the business will do far more to convince our employers of a more rewarding renumeration that any edict from CILIP.

I don't really buy this CILIP-approved line that everything is our fault and our pointing out that we are often paid less than other professionals is some kind of moral weakness. My own employers think I'm lovely, but that doesn't mean their budget magically expands to meet my requirements. My argument is with the *general* assumption that front-line librarians deserve about 20k. If that perception could be changed it would benefit us all; it doesn't seem too much to ask that CILIP might occasionally put some effort into that, as well as reminding us all how hard we should be working.

Indeed......

CILIP could make all the noise it likes about what information professionals should be paid, but unless we are prove our worth (and shout about it) to our employers, and indeed the colleagues to whom we provide a service, we are likely to find ourselves without gainful employment, let alone a decent salary....
