Good point Biddy. Perhaps I should pay
myself £150 a year subs.

I have always held the view that WE are
CILIP. If we complain about CILIP then we complain about ourselves.

Indeed......
CILIP could make all the noise it likes about what
information professionals should be paid, but unless we are
prove our worth (and shout about it) to our employers, and indeed the
colleagues to whom we provide a service, we are likely to find ourselves
without gainful employment, let alone a decent salary....

Subject: Re: LIS gazette: WatsonRemuneration depends to a great extent on an employer's evaluation of the size of the job, but also on their perception of the value of the job to the organisation. One of the major weaknesses as far as the LIS profession is concerned is a failure to demonstrate any impact that the information service makes on the achievement of the organisation's overall aims. This is well demonstrated in the literature, which is largely deficient of any real evidence of impact. Take a look at our recent research report
Wavell, C, Baxter, G, Johnson, I.M, and Williams, D.A. (2002) Impact evaluation of museums, archives and libraries: available evidence project Final report on a research project funded by Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries. Aberdeen: The Robert Gordon University.
http://www.rgu.ac.uk/files/imreport%2EpdfEven if we had the evidence, we are generally (as a profession and as individuals) not particularly good at getting the message across. There is a tendency to just winge about how badly we are treated!

Subject: LIS gazette: WatsonHow encouraging to see that CILIP has three purposes, none of them including addressing the poverty-level wages in what we are pleased to call a profession. Perhaps if it did (and with any sense of urgency or robustness) we might stand a chance of getting 40, 000 members.
