I don’t really buy this CILIP-approved line that everything is our fault and our pointing out that we are often paid less than other professionals is some kind of moral weakness. My own employers think I’m lovely, but that doesn’t mean their budget magically expands to meet my requirements. My argument is with the *general* assumption that front-line librarians deserve about 20k. If that perception could be changed it would benefit us all; it doesn’t seem too much to ask that CILIP might occasionally put some effort into that, as well as reminding us all how hard we should be working.

Indeed......

CILIP could make all the noise it likes about what information professionals should be paid, but unless we are prove our worth (and shout about it) to our employers, and indeed the colleagues to whom we provide a service, we are likely to find ourselves without gainful employment, let alone a decent salary....
