NEW GUIDELINES HELP SECONDARY SCHOOL LIBRARIES PRESS FOR MORE RESOURCES

School libraries have key role in realising vision for education says CILIP

Developing technologies and new resources are rewriting the parameters for school libraries, say the editors of new guidelines from CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.  Due for launch at the CILIP School Libraries Group Conference, to be held in Cambridge from April 2-4, The CILIP Guidelines for Secondary School Libraries make practical recommendations for the effective management of libraries in secondary schools.  They are also designed to help school librarians with advocacy in support of the services they provide.

“School libraries empower learning,” say the Guidelines’ editors Lynn Barrett and Jonathan Douglas.  “They give access to real and virtual environments where learners can discover resources that inspire and develop them.”  These learners may be students, their teachers, their families or the wider community, the editors continue, “yet they all share in the knowledge, information and works of the creative imagination to which the library provides access.”

Developing lifelong learners who are confident and capable users of information is at the heart of the Government’s vision for the future of education, the Guidelines say.  School libraries have a key role to play in realising the vision that the Government has outlined.

At the heart of the Guidelines are ten recommendations that form the basic foundation of excellent school library provision. The recommendations cover:

Drawn up by specialists in the field, these Guidelines are an essential tool for librarians and all those involved in generating and implementing a new vision for school libraries.
