I'm afraid I have only had time for a cursory look at the e-mails. While it is great to see so many (new) people engaging with the debate the tone does appear to be on the negative side. We are CILIP so if we criticise it then we are criticising ourselves. As with most organisations you get out of it what you put in. If we all engaged fully in a positive manner we could be proud of CILIP. My own personal experiences of CILIP have been very favourable. I am all in favour of discussion lists, having lived through the end of the IIS and the beginning of CILIP. But they are just one means of raising issues and achieving results. For the last year I have been chairing the CILIP Web Programme Board that has overseen the development of the new CILIP web site, which will be fully launched at Online. The commitment of the CILIP staff involved in working against very tight deadlines, brand-new software and methods of working, and the inevitable budget constraints, to meet member needs has been most impressive. The problems that professional organizations face in meeting emerging member needs whilst continuing to serve current needs are not unique to CILIP. I am currently involved in a limited way in setting up a new professional organization in the USA (www.cmprofessionals.com) that is only a few months old and yet is already recognizing that the objectives and visions of the founders may not be quite in tune with requirements as members from around the world join and make their needs known . But the Board have listened and changes are already starting to be put in place. But change takes time and above all commitment from everyone concerned, and I think I'd like to see a little more commitment to helping CILIP work through the issues and problems and a reduction in the number of emails in my in-box. But then I'm old and grey! PS. Am I alone in feeling that if we are a professional organization we should use appropriate professional language when referring to colleagues? And before anyone points it out to me I realise that the word 'bigwig' was used by Charles Dickens! If this list generated as many practical ideas for the future as it does negative slanging matches I am sure life would be a lot more productive ! I think we've generated quite a lot of practical ideas recently. For one, CILIP bigwigs are so alarmed at the discontent expressed that they're actually thinking of responding some time.
