Your chance to nominate your outstanding reference work of 2004 

Nominations open for the 2004 CILIP Information Services Group/Nielsen BookData Reference Awards 2004 

Which do you think are the recent outstanding reference works of the past year?  Now's your chance to nominate the work that has most impressed you in the Reference Awards 2004.

Administered by the Information Services Group (ISG) of CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, and sponsored by leading bibliographic information supplier Nielsen BookData, the Award is open to works first published between 1 July 2003 and 31 December 2004.  All nominations are welcome - from individuals, libraries, publishers and other organisations.

Since 1970, the Reference Awards have recognised excellence, promoted awareness of outstanding reference books and products, encouraged quality and set industry standards.  The two Awards on offer are:

The Besterman/McColvin Medals for outstanding works of reference published in the UK are awarded in two categories: print and electronic.  Winners receive a cash prize of £500  accompanied by a certificate and commemorative medal.  Judges will assess the nominees on: 

* authority of the work and the quality and kind of articles and entries
* accessibility and arrangement of the information
* scope and coverage
* style
* relevance and quality of the illustrations
* quality of indexing
* adequacy of the bibliographies and references
* up-to-dateness of the information
* physical presentation 
* originality of the work

The Walford Award is presented to an individual who has made a sustained contribution to the science and art of bibliography in the UK.  Again, the winner receives a cash prize of £500  and a certificate.

Winners will be announced and the awards presented at a special ceremony during Umbrella 2005 in Manchester, 30 June - 2 July. All those who nominate or who publish any of the nominated works will be invited to attend the ceremony, along with all those nominated.

CILIP Information Services Group

ISG supports members' interests in the provision of information services by promoting activities that improve the effectiveness of information provision to all sectors of society. The ISG liaises with all bodies within the information profession which are concerned with information transfer to promote a wider understanding and appreciation of the importance of information work, within our profession and more widely within the industry.
