COPYRIGHT - ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE UP TO DATE?

Three new books confirm Facet Publishing's pre-eminence in copyright advice for information professionals

March sees the publication of two new books on copyright, all especially targeted on the needs of information professionals, with a third to follow in July. And it's no surprise that they all come from the same stable - Facet Publishing, the book publishing arm of CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

First off the press is the brand new Practical Copyright for Information Professionals: the CILIP Handbook. Written by leading freelance copyright consultant and former CILIP Copyright Adviser Sandy Norman, this book is essential reading for anyone who uses, or wants to learn about using, copyright material in the course of their work.

"My aim is to provide commonsense, practical guidance on respecting and keeping on the right side of the copyright law in your library or information service," Ms Norman says. "There has been a lot of change emanating from the European Union Copyright Directive, so I've covered this extensively, with in-depth chapters on compliance with the new rules. Although this is a one-size-fits-all guide, I've highlighted and discussed how the different sectors of the profession will be affected," she continues.
Published at the same time is the second edition of Copyright for archivists and users of archives by Tim Padfield. As Copyright Officer, Curator of Photographs and Secretary of the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Council on National Records and Archives, at the Public Record Office, National Archives, Mr Padfield is exceptionally well qualified to advise on this topic.

"Since this book was first published, there have been several developments that will have a significant impact on archivists and archival researchers," Mr Padfield warns. "There's the relationship between copyright and the applications of the Freedom of Information Act - and there have also been some important new judgments in copyright and related cases that affect interpretation of the law. They include judgments on the law in relation to the Internet, of which anyone wishing to publish on the web needs to be aware."

Finally, following later this summer is the fourth edition of Graham P Cornish's Copyright: interpreting the law for libraries, archives and information services. Until recently Programme Director for the International Federation of Library Associations Availability of Publications Programme, Mr Cornish was previously responsible for copyright interpretation throughout the British Library. An ex-President of CILIP, he is now an independent consultant and leads the Copyright Circle workshop.
