Date: Tuesday 9 November 2004 Time: 6 for 6.30 pm Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, Clerkenwell, London EC1. (Map reference: http://digbig.com/3pmf) Speaker: Dr Leonard Will Topic: Thesauri and classification in the age of the Internet There has recently been a rediscovery of the value of thesauri and faceted classification schemes (albeit under the more fashionable name of "taxonomies") for searching and browsing collections of electronic resources. This talk will discuss underlying principles and opportunities for applying them in an electronic environment, as well as seeking to clarify terminological discrepancies that cause confusion when these topics are discussed. Leonard Will is well-known as a consultant in information management. He has a special interest in how subject indexing and classification can be used to provide computerised access to the resources of libraries, museums, archives and the Internet. Dr Will is a member of a British Standards Institution working party that is drafting revised standards on structured vocabularies for information retrieval. He is a chartered member of both CILIP and the British Computer Society. Until 1994 he was Head of Library and Information Services at the Science Museum, London. CILIP in London evening meetings are free and open to all with a professional interest in the topic. Refreshments will be available afterwards. As space is limited, please let us know if you are coming. Contact Tegwen Williams at [log in to unmask]
