FIRST CIRCULAR AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Melcom International's 26th annual Conference will take place in Munich from Monday, May 24th to Wednesday, May 26th 2004. MELCOM'S host and local convener will be:

Call for Papers
One of the conference sessions will be devoted to the library situation in Iraq, and papers on this subject are especially welcome. As the BSB will present an exhibition on "Precious Oriental manuscripts and rare printed books", a section on the history of printing in Middle Eastern languages is highly desirable.
We furthermore call for papers in the following usual categories:
· Acquisition policies and practices
· Manuscript studies and rare material collections
· Cataloguing policies and practices
· Libraries and new technologies

Please send proposed titles of papers to the MELCOM secretary before the end of January 2004. The Melcom board and the Organising Committee reserve the right to select among papers.

Programme
A preliminary programme and information on more details will be circulated as soon as possible, but only to those who will have stated their interest, please keep this in mind, and remember that your express of interest should also reach MELCOM secretary Nathalie Rodriguez ([log in to unmask]) before the end of January 2004.
Please remember that I will be grateful for any help in keeping the MELCOM mailing list tidy and up to date.

Travel and accommodation
Travel and accommodation regulations are as usual, all participants are asked to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements. Information about accommodation and practical details will be given in the second circular, and posted on the BSB website probably sooner : please check. If you intend to book your flight early, Helga Rebhan would like you to know that all state-owned museums in Munich are admission free on Sundays and that she is planning to organise an optional trip to Upper Bavaria on Thursday, May 27th. Do not hesitate to contact Helga Rebhan if you need a personal invitation letter to attend the conference ([log in to unmask]).

MELCOM International is an open organisation, welcoming members from all fields connected with Middle Eastern librarianship and books. Appel à communications
L'une des sessions sera consacrée à la situation des bibliothèques en Irak, les communications sur ce sujet sont donc très bienvenues. De même, des communications sur l'histoire de l'imprimerie dans les langues du Moyen-Orient s'inscriront particulièrement bien dans le contexte de ce congrès, la BSB présentant à cette occasion une exposition intitulée "Manuscrits précieux et imprimés rares orientaux ". Par ailleurs, l'habituel appel à communications est lancé pour les domaines suivants :
- Politiques et pratiques d'acquisition
- Manuscrits et documents rares et précieux
- Politiques et pratiques de catalogage
- Nouvelles technologies et bibliothèques

Merci d'adresser vos propositions à Nathalie Rodriguez, secrétaire du MELCOM international ([log in to unmask]), avant fin janvier 2004. Le bureau du MELCOM et les organisateurs se réservent le droit de choisir parmi les communications proposées.

Programme
Un pré-programme et des détails seront donnés aussi vite que possibles, mais ne seront adressés qu'à ceux qui en auront manifesté le souhait : n'oubliez pas de vous manifester auprès de moi, par courriel de préférence, avant fin janvier 2004 toujours. Merci de m'aider à tenir à jour la liste des destinataires de notre première circulaire en me signalant les erreurs, oublis, additions possibles…

Informations pratiques
Comme chaque année, voyage et séjour sont à la charge des participants. N'hésitez pas à contacter Helga Rebhan si votre déplacement nécessite une lettre d'invitation personnalisée. Des renseignements sur les hôtels ainsi que d'autres informations pratiques seront proposées dans la prochaine circulaire, et seront probablement disponibles plus tôt sur le site Internet de la BSB. A vous de vérifier, si vous souhaitez prendre des dispositions précoces. Par ailleurs, Helga Rebhan fait savoir que les musées nationaux sont ouverts et gratuits le dimanche et qu'elle prévoit d'organiser une visite en Haute Bavière le jeudi 27 mai.

Le MELCOM international est une association ouverte aux personnes s'intéressant aux bibliothèques et aux livres liés au Moyen-Orient. Toute information sur l'association, ainsi que les programmes des dernières conférences se trouvent sur le site Internet du MELCOM. Toutes les circulaires seront disponibles sur ce même site.
