APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING

The Gate

Date: Tuesday 8 June 2004
Time: 6.30 pm
Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1
Speaker: Adrian Whittle, Head of Libraries, London Borough of Newham

The Gate is Newham's newest library. Its co-location with a Local Service
Centre, gives the community access to the full range of Council services
under one roof. The Gate features cutting edge design, pioneering use of
information technology, and an extensive programme to support learning, as
well as access to both cultural activities and a wide range of advice
services.

A recent Government report has described The Gate as "...the social heart of
the high street, a catalyst for urban regeneration and promoter of lifelong
learning".

In his talk, Adrian Whittle will explore the background to this innovative
development in library design (which includes an emphasis on self-service
technology and smart-card applications) and reveal why it has been such a
success with users.

Adrian Whittle is Head of Libraries, London Borough of Newham. Formerly he
was Head of Service in Hackney and previously had worked in Southwark,
Lambeth,
Westminster and authorities outside London. He is a member of the Executive
Committee of the Association of London Chief Librarians and one of London's
representatives on the National Committee of the Society of Chief
Librarians.
