Hi Carol, I think that your idea is a great idea - whilst I think that Emilce's views can be a tad extremist - I believe that there are a lot of issues out there affecting us, and having a discussion list to this effect could help members put things into perspective. A few issues have been highlighted over the last few days, and getting things into the open can hopefully help others by emphasizing that they are not alone. As far as chartering goes, I am doing route A simply for my own piece of mind - my employers do not request it, and infact when I started we had to write our own Route A programme, because I was the only non-chartered Librarian within the organisation, which from a personal point is great because I was involved from the beginning. I am working hard to complete it and feel that this list has helped, and the current discussion has brought some right relief over the past few days! The Library and Information Profession is compared to others, for example Accountancy pathetically paid, especially when Accountants qualify whether through ICAS, CIPFA, CIMA or ACCA earnings can jump from 22,000 to 30,000!!!! Many Accountants don't even have a Hons degree! But this comes with the territory and Accountants are valued more (for some strange reason- they just seem to punch numbers into a calculator - but I live with one and am allowed to say that!)- we just have to continue to make ourselves completely invaluable - until the world realises that it can't evolve without us! (Although my partner and his colleagues do phone me on a daily basis looking for all sorts of information - so maybe we are on the way!) Maybe part of the reason that people come to question the status quo while they're doing their Charter, is that we're analysing our own jobs, seeing how we can do them better, and coming up against things that stand in the way of us being able to make changes for the better. When we talk to people who have progressed further in their professional career, we find that some of these issues have been problems for a while. While being enthusiastic and positive about many things in the profession, including our own jobs and the people we provide services to, its almost impossible to look at what we do analytically, and not realise that some things are less than ideal. Maybe another list for people working towards their Charter, for the discussion of issues which are not directly to do with the production of our PDRs or training might be useful. I'm not sure I feel confident enough to discuss some issues with people who have been in the profession for years- (although being on other lists is very useful) also I don't want to waste time on a list reinventing the wheel. Chances are that people working towards their Charter are going to want to discuss similar issues, and new people will keep wanting to raise the same issues that a list has discussed previously. If anyone would be interested in a list for people on the way to their Charter, not directly related to training or PDR writing, could you get in touch? It would be useful if only people who are interested in joining or helping to moderate such a list got in touch on this subject, and not people who just want to say that they would be happy if such discussion were taken off this list. Of course its always possible that Emilce is in the process of doing this herself. I've forwarded her a copy of this just in case. All the best, Carol. -----Original Message----- From: list for CILIP members working towards MCLIP status [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Charlotte Wilmot Sent: 15 January 2004 09:28 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: The chartership qualification Dear all, Chartership and qualifications are currently under review and you will have been sent a booklet explaining it and a request for you to feed back to CILIP. They are open to you comments and constructive criticism. Use the opportunity and express your opinion to the people with the power to do it. Cilip is not an anonymous agent, you can actually get involved and express your opinions and make suggestions. I would suggest that people who are not happy with the way CILIP goes about raising our pay and status put themselves forward for membership of a board, go along to the AGM and raise your issues. Get them debated nationally or raise it with your local branch as an issue for debate. Sometimes it is difficult to do these things either geographically or time wise, but you can always write or e-mail the powers that be. I am enthusiastic about the profession and chartership, but I do also question the way things are and get involved with the consultation exercises that CILIP put to its members from time to time. While I was a student I also became a student rep on the Northern CILIP branch committee to see what it was all about and gain experience of committees. I was rather miffed to see that people thought that people who were enthusiastic about chartership, never questioned anything. That is surely what you do in the chartership report, EVALUATE and ANALYSE. My policy is to be proactive - seize opportunities when they arise, direct your constructive criticsm, suggestions for improvement to people who have the power to change things. Above all be positive and enthusiastic (hard to maintain I know when you are working and writing your report - I'm not Doris Day) Charlotte Wilmot Subject Librarian: Film and Graphics/ Erasmus Co-ordinator Arts Institute at Bournemouth, Fern Barrow, Wallisdown, Poole, Dorset, BH12 5HH UK Telephone:+ 44 (0) 1202 363256 Fax: + 44 (0) 1202 537729 e-mail: [log in to unmask] OR [log in to unmask] --------------------------------------------------------------- The Arts Institute at Bournemouth This e-mail is intended for the named recipient(s) only.
