For the first time ever in London, we are delighted to present a fine selection of the most ambitious and unpredictable short films made in Spain last year. A unique opportunity to meet the new generation of Spanish film directors, the screening will be followed by a Q& A with the filmmmakers themselves.
Organized in collaboration with Shortmetraje (New York Spanish Film Festival), the event will take place at the Other Cinema on Tuesday 24th February.

The international success of directors such as Pedro Almodovar, Alejandro Amenabar, and Julio Medem, who also began their careers making short films, continues to inspire novel filmmakers. Best of Spain is the only initiative in the UK to highlight the incredible growth of the short film industry in that country, an industry that produces 400 shorts a year and features more than 60 short film festivals. Our selection offers a variety of genres, styles and themes that demonstrate the diversity of vision and tantalizing creativity of this new generation. The program includes:
TOPEKA by Asier Altuna, 2002, 4min

The men from a small village make a circle in the middle of the town square. In the middle of the circle a fight between two rams...

It is a brutal piece about the human condition. The film has garnered fifteen awards at festivals around the world and is still shocking audiences not just in Spain but in Rio de Janeiro, Cork, London, and many more. Excerpts of the film have been included in Julio Medem's controversial La Pelota Vasca

EL VIAJE (The Journey) by Toni Bestard, 2002, 9min

Two kids find the body of a dead man. A long and heavenly trip has begun.

It is one of the most celebrated works in national and international film festivals this year including Locarno International Film Festival and the jury award at Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, the most important short festival in the world.

LA SANTA PERDIO LA PACIENCIA (The Saint Has Lost Her Patience) Arantzazu Gomez, 2002, 11min
During the Spanish Holy Week, a woman is carried on an Easter throne...

Displaying sumptuous aesthetics young Gomez give us her unique vision of women's experiences. Awarded the Nahemi-KODAK Prize for Creative Film Making in London and screened all around Europe, La Santa proves a talent to watch out for.

EN CAMAS SEPARADAS (In Separate Beds) Javier Rebollo, 2002, 18min

Those everyday passengers who take the latest trains on weekdays always wear wrinkled clothes. They sit in an empty wagon, staring at each other.

Rebollo's films have been programmed along with works by Almodóvar, Saura and Colomo in Spanish retrospectives at Locarno and the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festivals. En Camas Separadas is his latest and has awarded an unprecedented number of awards this year.
HISTORIA DE UN BUHO (The Story of a Night-Time Bus) Jose Luis Acosta Salmeron, 2002, 22min

Every night a shy bus driver encounters a very special passenger.

Nominated to the Goya awards (Spain's equivalent to the Oscar's), this accomplished drama represented Spain in Amsterdam, Berlin, Taipei to name a few, and gathered awards for best film, actor, actress, editing, soundtrack as well as audience awards in festivals all around Spain.

TERCERO B Jose Mari Goenaga, 2002. 18 min

He's forty, short and ordinary; she's a bit younger, reserved and courageous. Neither of them are looking for trouble, but both share a secret which cannot go beyond those four walls-at leats not if they can't help it.
