Subject: Please post: Ramsay's "Folding and Fracturing of Rocks" is back in
print

"Folding and Fracturing of Rocks," by John G. Ramsay was one of the first
major publications to develop the basic theory of stress and strain in
mathematical terms for geologists and to explain how this theory could be
used to solve practical problems in structural geology and tectonics.

Although out-of-print for many years, it is still one of the most frequently
cited and quoted texts in contemporary research publications in structural
geology.

The Blackburn Press has recently returned the book to print, making it
available to libraries, geologists, scholars and researchers who would like
to own or replace a copy of a classic reference in the field.

"Folding and Fracturing of Rocks," by John G. Ramsay. ISBN 1-930665-89-X,
paperback, 568 pages.

In "Folding and Fracturing of Rocks", the author applies the basic theory of
stress and strain to the study of the fracturing, folding and rock strain
processes commonly arising in geology. He develops the theory of both small
and large finite strain with particular emphasis on progressive deformation
and its geological implications. The book was one of the first textbooks to
discuss practical methods for evaluating the states of finite strain in two
and three dimensions.

The discussions and methods of strain analysis set out in "Folding and
Fracturing of Rocks" have stood the test of time, and many subsequent
research developments in structural geology have their origins in this book.
The book is based on sound mathematical principles which have not become
dated and its photographic illustrations of natural examples of deformation
theory keep the book relevant today.

The Blackburn Press is a relatively new publishing company, founded with the
mission of keeping in print and available for purchase at reasonable prices
book titles that larger publishers have lost interest in and have declared
to be "out of print." It specializes in scientific and technical books that
are classics in their field. (See www.blackburnpress.com.)
