RE: Programs for aged care facilities?

Hi Andrew,

Here in Suffolk we have been piloting a reminiscence programme. Participating museums have developed themed boxes of objects that can be used in handling sessions in care homes. A specialist trainer has been delivering sessions to care workers on how to use the boxes to encourage reminiscence. The homes  can then loan the boxes from the museums. It has been hugely successful with extremely touching accounts of elderly people speaking after weeks of saying nothing, reminiscence sessions leading on to themed weeks with enthusiastic involvement of staff and residents and more enquiries than we have boxes for!

If you would like further details then feel free to contact me off list.

Subject: Programs for aged care facilities?

Dear Gemocrats

Over the last few years at Macquarie Uni (Sydney, Australia) we have
developed outreach programs for our museums and collections (science &
art) that are delivered in aged care facilities.  We think this is a
fairly neglected audience, but we see good value in continuing this
specific type of community outreach work.  We were wondering how many
other cultural facilities also run programs specifically directed at
this group?

It would be interesting to compare notes off list if anyone else is
doing similar things in the UK or elsewhere.

Cheers

Andrew
