''Creating Safer & Stronger Communities - the contribution of cultural
services''. LGA, Jan. 2004

useful report to use for advocay & good practice ...e.g. page 22

'' Museums, archives and libraries have an important role to play in promoting
knowledge and understanding of diverse cultures and in fostering
a sense of identity and racial tolerance. Cultural institutions can reflect the
existence and contribution of all sections of the community and
show the transformative effect that ethnic minorities have had on British
society. If interpreted in a way that is broad and relevant to today's
society they can help to foster a sense of identity, ownership, pride and self
respect. Many libraries and cultural institutions take part in
the annual black history month event which is held every October. The aims are
to:
- promote knowledge of black history and experience;
- disseminate information on positive black contributions to British society;
- heighten the confidence and awareness of black people in their cultural
heritage.''
