Hi Jack,
You are right - like almost all fsl programs at the moment,
avwcreatehd writes out in the filetype specified by FSLOUTPUTTYPE.
Apart from changing this variable, the other way to change the
filetype is to use (after it is written) the utility avwchfiletype.
