Anyone interested in the way cultural artifacts can be read for their ethnographic content, should read two books by David Marc: "Demographic Vistas" and "Bonfire of The Humanities" I most highly recommend the second. It's hilarious as well as magnificently insightful. The purest specifically ethnographic film I've ever worked on, or seen for that matter (I've edited tons of them for public tv) was produced by Education Development Center Film Studio in Cambridge MA, in the 60's It is a series of 11, one hour plus documentaries, untranslated and unnarrated and exquisitely photographed of a complete one year migratory cycle in the life of a band of Netsilik Eskimoes.
