Here at the University of Huddersfield, we have academic skills tutors
in each of our schools providing academic support to all students. For
the first time last year they introduced a new 'Individual Learning
Profile' for all first year students which asks questions around the
area of study skills, e.g. writing, reading, spelling, listening skills,
etc. This highlighted a number of students possibly 'at risk' of having
dyslexia and they were subsequently referred to the Disability Support
Service for a dyslexia screening. It also highlighted students with a
disability/medical condition/SpLD and a list of these students was
passed to our office so we could cross-check this against our records
and write to those who were not known to us.

With best wishes

We are thinking of "screening" all students by asking them to write a
short [2 page max] essay to submit to their personal tutor for
evaluation - ostensibly to assess general literacy, essay writing skills
etc, but I've asked for the poorer ones to be forwarded for
consideration by a dyslexic specialist to try to pick up students with
learning difficulties for further screening. A kind of "pre-filter" to
make dyslexia screening more manageable.

As part of a process to refine our system of identifying students with
dyslexic tendancies, we are considering offering a short dictation
exercise during Induction Week. Do other HE institutions screen new
intakes in this way? If not, why not, and what are the alternatives?

Any sharing of information would be much appreciated!

Thanks! Diolch!
