The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) is seeking to fund a four
month study to undertake a technical appraisal of the LOCKSS system and its
potential UK applications. LOCKSS stands for LOTS OF COPIES KEEP STUFF SAFE.
It is a tool developed by the Stanford-based archiving / access initiative
of the same name, which enables academic libraries to provide continuing
access to licensed e-journals.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the full technical aspects of
LOCKSS, to assess its sustainability as a long term archiving solution and
its potential role for preserving UK content. The study should also look at
the support necessary to implement the system in the UK and to ensure its
continuing development and sustainability.

Funding of up to £40,000 including VAT and expenses is available for this
study. The deadline to submit proposals is 12 noon on Thursday 20th May
2004. The study should be undertaken in the period June - September 2004.
